Check back later for more in-depth coverage of this year's NIKE All-American Camp, including player interviews, game footage, and a scouting report from Saturday's All-Star Games. Also check back for the SPARQ Basketball Rating results for all the participants at this year's camp. If you haven't already, now would be a great time to join our team.
On Friday at the NIKE All American Camp, 111 players received a SPARQ Basketball Rating* after participating in specific testing drills designed for basketball. After the three testing sessions with roughly 40 players each were complete, high-flying forward Brandan Wright (Brentwood Academy, Nashville) came away with the highest SPARQ Rating with an impressive 91.06.
Wright also recorded the highest SPARQ Rating at the NIKE Boys Elite Skills Academy in Beaverton, Oregon last month with a 85.46, but improved his score by almost five points in Indianapolis. Wright initially told us after the testing session that he thought he did not perform as well as he did in Beaverton because his 20-meter time "dropped" from 2.86 to 2.95, but he was enthused to find out he recorded the top mark.
"My 20 time wasn't as good and my endurance jump was about the same, but I improved in the agility test (compass drill) and power ball, " Wright said at the conclusion of the camp on Saturday.
Wright was able to record the highest overall SPARQ Basketball Rating by finishing in the top 10 in three of the testing categories. His 2.95 20-meter dash time was the tenth best among the 123 swoosh campers. The returning EA SPORTS All-American also tested in the top ten in the power ball throw with a 64-foot toss and greatly improved his score in the compass drill with a quick 5.72 second average. His agility score showed much improvement since the Elite Skills Academy as Wright recorded a 6.54 average in Oregon.
Although his individual marks of 57 in the 30-second endurance jump test and his 33.2 inch vertical jump did not land in the top ten, his overall performance at 6-foot-10 gave him the highest rating since the SPARQ Basketball Rating is the only one SPARQ (an acronym for Speed, Power, Agility, Reaction and Quickness) has unveiled that incorporates an athlete's height as a variable in the calculation.
Wright was not only spectacular in the testing session, but also dominate during actual game play. He was the most impressive forward all week long and more than held his own in a much ballyhooed match up with Kevin Durant during the NIKE Camp All Star Game (check back for a complete report later). Durant was unable to test at this year's camp because of previous summer school commitments and did not arrive until after the testing was complete on Friday afternoon.
Last season, Durant and Wright were two of the three underclassmen named to the EA SPORTS All American Boys Basketball team, with ABCD camp participant Greg Oden the other. Although Durant is highly-touted (ranked the No. 2 prospect in the country by RivalsHoops.com), it was Wright who showed the most upside of any player at the NIKE Camp with his tremendous athleticism, unselfish attitude and willingness to compete.
Besides Wright, two other elite players also finished in the top 10 in three testing categories. Josh Chichester (Lakota West, Westchester, Oh.) a 6-foot-7 rising junior recorded a 88.96 SPARQ Rating with a top ten finish in the 20 meter dash (2.92), compass drill (5.64 seconds average) and one-step vertical jump (34.9 inches). Fellow Class of 2007 prospect Chris Wright (Trotwood, Oh.) recorded the second highest SPARQ Rating with an impressive 89.86. His 2.94 20-meter dash, 69-foot power ball toss, and 37.7-inch vertical jump were all landed in the top 10.
At 6-foot-2, Derrick Rose, finished in the top five in four of the testing categories and finished with a 85.34 SPARQ Rating. His SPARQ Rating improved over his 84.10 score at the Elite Skills Academy, where he also finished in the top five in four out of the five testing categories.

*The goal of the SPARQ Basketball Rating is to give coaches, trainers and athletes the tools to assess the overall athleticism of a basketball player with tests that are designed to reflect the specific physical demands of the game. The SPARQ Rating is not designed or intended as a measure of basketball skills or an athlete's potential success on the court. SPARQ realizes that the intangibles of desire, hard work, teamwork and knowledge of the game all contribute to ultimate success in a complex skill sport like basketball.
