#2  Westran Hornets   (2013
Record: 12-1)
A look at the Hornets:  Although the Hornets earned
the Lewis & Clark and district titles, their season ended prematurely,
falling to Marceline in their rematch in the playoffs. Graduation took
several of the Hornet stars, however a pair of all-state players return in
Zane Jacoby and Jake Ingebritson.
Jacoby, a 6-foot-3 inch, 205-pound quarterback passed for
1,658 yards and 18 touchdowns, he also rushed for 1,736 yards and 31 scores.
Senior Jake Ingebritson(6-1 207) rushed for 1,322 yards and
20 touchdowns and is also quality receiver out of the backfield. The offense
averaged more than 40 points a game in 2013 and have averaged more than 30
points per game for the past seven seasons.  "If we can stay healthy we
expect to continue those numbers", commented head coach Curtis Jasper.
Also returning for the Hornet offense, a pair of
all-conference lineman including senior Morgan Wallace(6-1
247) and junior Brennan Kitchen(6-3 305). A trio of wide receivers return as
well, senior Parker Howard(5-11 173), junior Dylan Payton,
and sophomore Austin Sears.
On defense the Hornets provide multiple looks, a season
ago they allowed just 140 yards per game and less than 10 points per
contest. "We feel we can continue to be strong defensively" added Westran
who returns an all-state playmaker at each level of the defense.
Ingebritson returns at linebacker after totaling 79 tackles and a pair of
interceptions. Wallace returns on the defensive line, he finished with 74
tackles including 18 for loss, and a pair of sacks.  Howard earned top
honors at defensive back finishing with 62 tackles and 3 interceptions and
will move to linebacker this season.
Six starters return for the Hornets including Jacoby
who will pull double duty at defensive back, junior defensive back Dalton
Wright, and sophomore defensive back Austin Sears(5-8 130. In addition look
for senior linebacker Tristin Best(5-10 165) to increase his role after
finishing with a pair of sacks a season ago. On the line sophomore Carson
Latimer(6-1 223) and junior Zac Long(6-3 215) each will move into starting
While Ingebritson rehabs from a lingering leg injury the defense must have
other step up.
The success of this Hornet team will hinge on how quickly the young players
mesh with their talented veterans.  "We will need to mature fast if we
hope to get off to a strong start", added Jasper.
