Mosports.com Class 5 Pre-Season Power Poll
#2  Webster Groves Statesmen
(2013 record, 9-5)

Meet the Statesmen: The
Statesmen advanced to the semifinal round of the Class 5 playoffs a season
ago and return with the bulk of their talented returning. "Webster figures
to be a player deep into the playoffs again this year", commented a
confident head coach Cliff Ice.
Senior quarterback Rob
Thompson(6-2 200) returns to lead the Webster spread offense along
with seven starters.  A season ago Thompson completed 56% of his passes
for more than 2,500 yards and 25 touchdown passes. Thompson's favorite
target,
Cam Hilton(6-1 175) are University of Missouri recruit, returns at wide
receiver he led the team with 54 receptions for 922 yards and 14 touchdowns.
Joining Hilton at wide out, senior Jordan Shumate(5-9 170) and junior John
Thomas(6-3 170) return.
Senior Nick Delgado returns a the leading
rusher, he gained 216 yards and scored 4 Statesmen touchdowns. Newcomer
Djakeem Fedrick(5-9 195) brings speed to the backfield and is expected to
have a break out season.  The Statesmen line will be imposing with the
return of senior Mark Abegg(6-2 265), senior Anthony Jackson(6-2 295), and
junior Kris Jones(6-3 320).
The Statesmen will employ a 40 defensive
scheme and will return six starters to their line up. Hilton returns as the
leading tackler for the Statesmen, he finished with 63 tackles and 7
interceptions in an outstanding junior season. Jackson and Abegg will pull
double duty on the defensive line and will be joined by sophomore Esque
Ewing(5-10 295). Senior Anthony Washington(6-0 175) returns at defensive
back, he finished with 34 tackles.
"Daniel Deadmon(6-3
205) and Caleb Granberry(5-9 200) must step up to solidify
the heavy loss at linebacker", added Ice. Senior Darion Knighten(5-8 170) is
another newcomer at defensive back from whom big things are expected this
season.
The Statesmen will compete in the newly created Suburban 12
South with Ritenour, Parkway North, Pattonville, Summit, and familiar Turkey
Day foe, Kirkwood.  With the Pioneers move to Class 6 the route to the
Edward Jones Dome will be different this season for the Statesmen.
With a solid returning core and quality talent joining the lineup an all
varsity Turkey Day game is once again in jeopardy.
