Moberly Spartans
(2013 record, 10-1)
A look ahead: Returning from a season that included
the North Central Missouri Conference title and a 10-1 record the Moberly
Spartans have plenty to celebrate, but are now ready to create new
highlights with another talented group of players.
"2013 was a great season of football filled with young
people that that were trying to get better every day and do things right
both on and off the field", commented head coach Jason
Ambroson who begins his 13th season in Moberly. "When you win
off the field with leadership and discipline, then things will most likely
work out the way you want them on the field as well.
Last year's group of guys got a big return on their investment and
had a good time doing it."
The Spartans return twenty letterman, six starters on
offense led by talented senior running back Gregg Bain who
rushed for 846 yards, gaining 9 yards per carry, and earning all-conference
and all-district honors a season ago. Senior wideout
Dupree Alexander(6-0 170) returns as an all-conference performer,
he collected 29 receptions for 532 yards.
Other returning starters include senior WR Scott
Mason(6-0 180), senior offensive lineman Mickey Sires(6-0 250), junior OL
Jess Brownfield(6-2 250), and all-conference senior kicker Gregg Bain(6-0
200). John Heimann and Drake Davidson are competing for the
quarterback job and Drake Gross wlll be a significant
contributor at running back.
The Moberly defense which gave up just 156 points a
season ago will be good once again will the return of Bain at linebacker as
part of seven returning starters. Senior Scott Mason(6-0 180) earned
all-district honors, he returns along with a host of seniors including CB
Tyler Huffman(5-11 180), Alexander at corner back, strong safety Deondrae
Dameron(5-10 175), Chris Palmer(6-1 200), and Cameron Smith(6-1 185).
"This group has a lot of work to do to find chemistry
and their place with one another.", added
Ambroson. "It is a whole new year.
The off season has been very good as a team, and gives them the
possibility of success. Good
blend of old faces with experience and new faces with hunger.
Getting those things to work together, develop a lot of toughness,
and find, and embrace new roles can lead this group to another fine season."
