South Shelby Cardinals
(2013 record,
Battling in one of the top small school conferences in the
Show-Me state the South Shelby Cardinals are battled tested and prepared
once the Class 1 playoffs arrive. The Cardinals will again compete
with Macon, Centralia, Brookfield, and Palmyra.
Rob Wilt will return
plenty of experience to compete in the league and rank among the top Class 1
programs in the state. Leading a group of six returning offensive
starters, senior quarterback Brett Threlkeld(5-8 155)
returns after rushing for 755 yards, passing for 533 yards, and accounting
for 19 touchdowns. Big things are expected from Threlkeld who Wilt
says worked very hard in the off-season on his accuracy.
He will be
joined by senior Trace Windsor(6-0 175) who rushed for
1,362 yards and 15 touchdowns. Senior wide receiver Austin Durbin(6-3
165) returns, he grabbed 14 receptions for 363 yards and 5 scores. All-state
offensive tackle Ryan Larrick(6-1 265) returns along with juniors Sidney
Wear(6-2 215 OG) and Bryce Fifer(5-10 185 OG/FB).
experienced Cardinals have great speed in the backfield at the skill
positions. "We have more experience and strength on the offensive line this
season", commented Wilt. The line should provide plenty of holes for
Windsor who is closing in on the all-time rushing record at South Shelby.
The Cardinals return eight starters on defense and using multiple
defensive schemes (4-3, 4-4, 5-3) hope to reduce their points per game from
20 of a season ago.
Many of the top names on offense will fill key
roles in the defense. Threlkeld returns at defensive back, he had 57
tackles, 2 interceptions, and 2 fumble recoveries along with Windsor who had
35 tackles, including 5.5 for loss from his linebacker position. "Our
secondary will be experienced with Durbin and Threlkeld leading the
way", stated Wilt. "We have two middle linebackers that could end
being among the best we've had", added Wilt. Wear and Fifer return at
linebacker, they combined for 171 tackles and 7 sacks a season ago.
"Ryan Larrick is an anchor in the middle of the defensive
line", added Wilt who also returns senior defensive end Josh Ridgely (5-9
175) and junior defensive end Taylor Foster(5-10 190).
With good
health throughout a challenging conference season Wilt feels they will tough
to beat in district play. As the line develops, "we can be pretty good for a
class 1 team", added Wilt.
