Greco, Glidewell both resign at Pattonville
Don Greco, longtime football coach at Pattonville High School, has resigned as the school's varsity football coach, effective for the 2003 season.
In 14 seasons as head coach of the Pirates, Greco led the Pirates to a 120-45 record, 13 state playoff appearances and guided the team to an appearance in the 2000 Class 5A Show-Me-Bowl.
Over the last 14 years, Pattonville enjoyed a great deal of success under the former Detroit Lions lineman, including four Suburban North Conference titles, three appearances in the state semifinals and nine trips to the state quarterfinals.
John Hamilton, the only Pattonville coach to work with Greco throughout his entire tenure, is sure he will be missed. "The success at Pattonville under Don was not a mistake," said Hamilton, who is retiring from coaching after working in one capacity or another for the Pirates for 32 years.
"He put in the time and effort it took, and worked for it all. You have to have the players in place, and they certainly deserve some credit, too." Even with good players, though, they need guidance.
"He developed those players and got a lot out of them," Hamilton continued. "Don is a tremendous coach and I'm certainly grateful for the opportunities he gave me."
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, May 13, the Pattonville Board of Education accepted the resignation of Athletic Director Rick Glidewell and approved the hiring of Doug Newton as the Pirates new varsity football coach.
Terry Funderburk was also hired as interim Activities Director, replacing Glidewell for the 2003-2004 school year. Funderburk had been serving as an assistant in the Athletic Directors office while also coaching the girls volleyball team.
Earlier reports that Newton had been hired as early as last Friday proved incorrect, as no official hirings can take place without approval of the school board, which did not meet until the 13th. - 30 -
