Mosports.com Class 3 Pre-Season Power Poll

#3 John Burroughs Bombers (2013 Record: 12-2)

A look ahead: Head coach John Merritt guided his Bombers to an 11-1 mark and a semifinal appearance in his first season leading John Burroughs. With several key returning starters returning as well as some talented newcomers the Bombers enter the 2014 season with high expectations.

A season ago the Bombers averaged 37.2 points per game and coach Merritt feels, "we should be even more explosive with the maturation of Van Slyke, Smith, Booker, at the receiver spots." Senior running back John Moten returns, "he looks to improve on his spectacular season last year", added Merritt. Moten, who has committed to attend Northwestern, averaged 8 yards-per-carry, rushing for more than 1,600 yards and scoring 28 touchdowns.

"Tre Moore(6-4 190) will enter his first season as the full time starter, but his talent at the QB position in unquestioned", stated Merritt". In limited duty, Moore completed 48% of his passes for 146 yards a season ago. Senior tight end Nathan Van Slyke (6-5 215) returns following a 25 catch, 315 yard receiving season, including 7 touchdowns. Ronald Smith and Chris Booker combined for 16 receptions, over 300 yards, and 3 scores.

Defensively, the Bombers allowed 9.9 ppt last year and will benefit from the return of all four linebackers. Junior Tom Bolstad(6-2 215) and junior Hunter Wilkins(5-9 195) should anchor a very stout unit. Bolstad led the team with 110 tackles and a pair of sacks, while Wilkins added 80 tackles, 1 fumble recovery, and 1 interception. Newcomers will play a key role for the Bombers this season and big things are expected from defensive backs Garrett Moore and Ryan Mill(5-9 160).

Sophomore Suleman Burrows will continue the tradition of Burroughs kicking excellence.
