Ducks infuse JUCO talent

History shows that slogans are empty by themselves. 51 years before "Win the Day" Mao Zedong concocted The Great Leap Forward, an ill-conceived motivational ploy to turn China into a modern industrial nation in five years. Agrarian peasants were hastily formed into collectives, backyard furnaces built to cast steel.

The furnaces failed miserably, either producing useless piles of pig iron or inferior alloys that failed on the job. Buildings collapsed. Cookpots were melted down to meet unrealistic quotas. In the collectives, agricultural production suffered, followed by disastrous floods, famine and starvation. For The Chairman it was a setback as bitter and embarrassing as a 42-16 meltdown in the Arizona desert.
