October 10, 2013The rosters for the annual Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas, which is to be held Saturday, December 21 at Gibbs Stadium in Spartanburg (S.C.), were publicly released Thursday afternoon.
UNC's football program will once again be well-represented at the annual showcase of the top gridiron talent in the Palmetto and Tar Heel States, as no less than six North Carolina commitments have been chosen to play in the game.
Headlining the list is Charlotte running back Elijah Hood, the top-ranked prospect in North Carolina in the Class of 2014 and one of two top-five in-state prospects in the Rivals.com senior rankings (the other is Charlotte offensive tackle Bentley Spain at No. 4), to commit to UNC and get selected for the Shrine Bowl.
Hood and Spain will naturally get a lot of attention the week of the Shrine Bowl from the various national analysts, but all four of the other UNC commitments playing in this year's game were among the top 30 in the state, including Charlotte linebacker Cayson Collins (No. 22), Charlotte defensive end Robert Dinkins (No. 24), Bunn place kicker Freeman Jones (No. 26) and Jacksonville wide receiver/return specialist Josh Cabrera (No. 29).
In addition, UNC's top uncommitted senior prospect, Greensboro defensive end Lorenzo Featherston, was also chosen for the game. The No. 13 prospect in North Carolina and an Under Armour Game selection, there will be lots of eyes on Featherston as well in Spartanburg the week of the game.
The list comprises approximately 75 percent of the eight in-state commitments for North Carolina in the 2014 class (Charlotte wide receiver Austin Proehl was the only notable omission, as Raleigh tight end Avery Edwards plays at a private school and wasn't eligible).
Tar Heel Illustrated will have extensive coverage of the six UNC commitments, as well as Featherston, from the Shrine Bowl practice fields the week of the game in mid-December.
