When your first two college offers are from Alabama and Auburn, you are doing something right.
Opelika (Ala.) corner Stephen Roberts landed an offer from Alabama in January, and on Wednesday, he received an offer from his childhood favorite Auburn. Roberts also nabbed a Kentucky offer for good measure.
"It was a blessing. They are in my backyard, they have good education. It shocked me when I first heard it, but I knew it was coming. they have a good coaching staff. This season will go better than last season," Roberts said.
Roberts called head coach Gus Malzahn to learn first hand about the new opportunity.
"He said he's been watching my film, that I'm a great player and aggressive corner. he officially offered me," said Roberts.
Roberts is a 6-foot, 170-pound corner that recorded four interceptions and 60-plus tackles in 2012. Roberts recently said Alabama was his number one choice, logical since the Crimson Tide were his only offer. Roberts' offer list has changed, and so has his mindset.
"It evens it out some," said Roberts. "You start of little and work your way up, but Auburn and Alabama are both big. Whoever had the best education, that's what I'm worried about. Football can come later."
Roberts has tentative plans to attend Auburn's Junior Day on February 23 if a baseball game doesn't conflict. Roberts plays centerfield for the Bulldogs. Roberts and teammate Jakell Mitchell both now hold Auburn offers and the thought of playing together is extremely appealing.
"He's a great player, you can depend on him when you need him," Roberts said. "We talked about playing together a couple of weeks ago. It's something we'd like to do."
Roberts wants to visit Georgia, Georgia Tech, Vanderbilt, Kentucky, Auburn and Duke over the next few months.
Roberts and Mitchell both plan to attend the Rivals Camp Series Presented by Under Armour on April 6 in Birmingham, Alabama.
