Editors warning, I will let you know early in this article, I have been involved in the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association and currently serve as the Web Master and I'm currently the President Elect. So there may be a slight bit of bias!
The second selection in the Missouri 30 for 30 celebrating the best in Show-Me basketball over the next thirty days as we prepare for the 2011-2012 season is the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association.
The Mission of the MBCA is to promote basketball in the state of Missouri. Since its inception 25 years ago the coaches in the association have worked to promote players throughout the state and the game they love so much.
Each year the MBCA selects and honors an Academic All-State team, an All-State team, Coaches of the Year, Mr. and Miss Special Olympics Basketball, Mr. and Miss Show-Me Basketball as well as other honors.
To promote the game the MBCA hosts the Norm Stewart Classic, an annual basketball series hosted at Columbia College involving teams from Central Missouri and throughout the state with a goal of raising money for Cancer research, Special Olympics, and the MBCA.
This year a new tradition, the Gary Filbert Classic will be hosted in January to honor long time Executive Director and Missouri Hall of Fame member Gary Filbert at Mexico High School where Filbert won nearly 500 games as the coach. Filbert was the heart and soul of the association until his passing and the driving force in what has become one of the largest associations in the nation.
The MBCA All-Star game as grown into the Missouri Challenge, now entering its fourth season bringing the best from each region of the state to Drury University where they compete for the Missouri Challenge title.
The MBCA fall coaching clinic has grown into one of the largest and finest in the nation annually drawing more than 1,200 coaches from across the state.? Speakers have included Larry Brown, Bruce Webber, Rick Majerus, Mike Anderson, Bob Hurley, Don Meyer, Jeff Van Gundy, and many others.
The Hard Court Herald, the official publication of the MBCA seeks to educate coaches, while sharing ideas that help in so many ways. Providing a voice for Missouri coaches with the Missouri State High School Activities Association and also the National H.S. Basketball Coaches Directors board the MBCA continues to help and promote the game in Missouri in many every expanding ways.
